Australia has a number of offshore islands, many of which are external territories (e.g. Norfolk Island). Apart from being interesting destinations in their own right, their geographic positions, sometimes thousands of kilometres from the coastline of mainland Australia, means they can host unique bird species that are otherwise difficult or impossible to see elsewhere.
These islands include Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island and others.
