Despite being a large bustling metropolis, there are some terrific birding locations in and around Melbourne. There are many reserves in particular around the shores of Port Philip Bay, including – improbably – a protected area at St Kilda Pier which is home to a colony of some 1400 Little Penguins. To the south-west of the city is one of Australia’s best birding hotspots, the sprawling Western Treatment Plant at Werribee.
